The Windy City

Some of the many things Chicago is famous for are: Chicago-style hot dogs, Chicago-style (deep dish) pizza, Maxwell Street Polish Sausage, jazz music, and 1920s gangsters like Al Capone. Chicago is also known for interesting architecture like the Sears Tower, many museums, and many loyal sports fans.

Winter in Chicago runs from late November to early March and is cold. Snowfall is frequent, so much so that it snows for several days in a month; sometimes real snowstorms can occur.

Navy Pier was designed by architect Charles Sumner Frost and opened to the public in 1916 as “Municipal Pier”. Navy Pier once housed a prison for draft dodgers during World War I. “Municipal Pier” was renamed “Navy Pier” in 1927 as a tribute to the Navy personnel who served in the war.

Buckingham Fountain is a Chicago landmark in the center of Grant Park. Dedicated in 1927, it is one of the largest fountains in the world. Built in a Rocky rococo wedding cake style and inspired by the Latona Fountain at the Palace of Versailles, it is meant to allegorically represent Lake Michigan.
